January 31, 2012

Dear Parents,

It is difficult to believe that the first month of 2012 has already come to a close.  It has been a busy time, and we ask that you continue to keep our school community in your prayers over the coming months.

Registration for 2012-2013:
Our school open house for new families is next Wednesday, February 8.  If you know anyone who is considering ICS for their children, please have them call the office at 604-224-5012 for more information.  If you have a child who will be entering Kindergarten in the fall, please let the office know so that we can send home an application form next week.  Re-registration packages for the other grades will be sent home on March 5 to be returned at Student-Led Conferences on March 15 and 16.  Details to follow.

Project Advance:
Next week, a portion of the video for the archdiocesan Project Advance campaign will be shot at ICS.  The video will be shown in parishes throughout the archdiocese and posted on the archdiocesan website.  If your child is selected to be a part of the video, a release form will be sent home for you to sign.

Coats for Kids:
Tuesday, February 14 will be a dress down day in support of Coats for Kids, a charity organized by the Knights of Columbus to purchase winter coats for children in need.  Students may wear Valentine colours (red, white, pink, purple) that day and are asked to bring a loonie or a toonie to donate to this worthy cause.

Lost and Found:
The Lost and Found is filling up again.  We want to train our students to be responsible, so please remind your child to check if he or she has lost any belongings.  Marking all items with your child’s name makes it much easier to return things to their rightful owners.  Matthew Voysey in Grade 3 is missing a black down jacket from the Gap.  It is labeled with his name, so please check if it has inadvertently made its way into your home.

Parent Participation:
Don’t forget to enter your parent participation hours online at http://www.icschoolvancouver.com/parent-participation-program-2/.  Even if you have already fulfilled your 40 hours of participation, we ask that you continue to log your hours as we are trying to determine how many total hours are required for the various jobs in the school.  The hard work of the parent community is so important in making our school the wonderful place that it is.  Thank you for your generosity!

Calendar:
Wednesday, February 8    Open House for new families
Tuesday, February 14    Dress down day for Coats for Kids
Thursday, February 16    Catholic Educators’ Conference—NO SCHOOL
Friday, February 17        Catholic Educators’ Conference—NO SCHOOL

Thank you for your continued support of Immaculate Conception School.

Yours sincerely,

Colette Foran

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year!  We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and that you enjoyed the holiday season with your children.  We are glad to have them back with us!  We are also happy to welcome Mrs. Taylor back from her maternity leave.  The year 2012 promises to be a busy and exciting one here at Immaculate Conception.

Upcoming Pro-D Day:
When the school calendar was sent out in August, there was still one Professional Development Day to be announced.  It has now been scheduled for Monday, March 12.  Please note that there will be NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS ON THAT DAY.

Kindergarten 2012-2013:
If you have a child who will be entering Kindergarten in September, please call the office at 604-224-5012 by Monday, February 6 to let us know.  Registration will happen later that month, but we would like to get an idea of how many siblings we have on our “waiting list.”

Open House:
ICS will be holding an open house for prospective families on Wednesday, February 8 from 6:30 to 8:00.  If you know of anyone who is considering our school, please pass this information along to them or have them call the school office for more information.

First Aid Course:
The school’s Emergency Preparedness committee is offering an emergency first aid and CPR training session facilitated by St. John’s Ambulance on Saturday, February 4 from 8:30 to 4:30 in the Parish Centre.  Spaces are still available.  If you are interested, please contact Chi Palmer at chi@mjpalmer.com or 604-224-2288.

Winter Weather:
Please remember to make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the cold weather.  In the event that we are hit with a snowstorm this winter, news of a school closure will be posted on our school website by 6:30 a.m. under the heading Breaking News.  We will also ask CKNW, News 1130 and Global TV to announce the closure.

Thank you for your continued support of Immaculate Conception School!

Yours sincerely,

Dear Parents,

It is difficult to believe that we have already completed three months of school!  So much has happened— volleyball season, the Walkathon, Parent-Teacher Interviews, report cards, the Christmas Fair…the list goes on and on.  Thank you to all of you for supporting us as we work together for your children.  We are truly blessed to belong to such a wonderful community.

Christmas Fair:
As you know, this year’s fair was a resounding success both financially and as a community event.  Sincere thanks to all who participated by volunteering at the fair, helping with setup and take down, contributing baking, donating to the silent auction, and so much more.  An enormous debt of gratitude goes to our fair conveners, Frances Blazich and Felicity Logie.  Their leadership, dedication, and hard work were a big reason for the fair’s success.

Book Fair:
The Book Fair was very successful this year.  Gross sales totaled $6,500, which resulted in ICS acquiring just over $600 in books plus 30% of the net sales in cash, which will go toward purchasing additional books for the library.  Thank you to all those parent volunteers who contributed their time to make this event so worthwhile and to the parents who supported the event by purchasing books.  Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

School Feast Day:
To celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8, a school mass will be held at 9:00 and the entire school will attend the Naden Band concert at the Vogue Theatre in the afternoon.  If you have not already returned your child’s permission slip, please do so by the end of this week.  PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 9 IN HONOUR OF OUR FEAST DAY.

Absentees:
If your child is away from school, please make sure that when he or she returns, you send a note explaining the absence, as it is required to ensure our government funding.  A phone call in the morning to let us know your child will be away is also much appreciated.

Report Cards:
If you have not already done so, please return your child’s report card cover and envelope to the classroom teacher as soon as possible.  Don’t forget to sign the back!

Winter Weather:
Please remember to make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the cold weather.  In the event that we are hit with a snowstorm this winter, news of a school closure will be posted on our school website by 7:15 a.m. under the heading Breaking News.  We will also ask CKNW, News 1130 and Global TV to announce the closure.

Calendar: Please visit our school calendar on the website. Here are a list of upcoming important dates to note:

Saturday, December 3 First Reconciliation for Grade 2
Monday, December 5 Advent Assembly 10:50 am
